Valentine's Day Wreath

Hello friends, family and fans!
I hope your new year is starting off wonderfully. So far my new year has been great. I have been taking a MUCH needed break and trying to rest before customs are back in business on February 1st. Apparently I worked too hard over the holidays (which I feel very fortunate for even though I was exhausted) and pinched a nerve in my shoulder. So now I am forced to relax while I take meds, rest, ice and PRAY that it gets better soon. In the meantime I have made this lovely wreath and decided to post a tutorial for all of you to make your own. Enjoy and make sure you email me (tobi@iveyhandcrafted.com) with your finished projects or post them on my facebook wall

Tools Needed:

1: Yo Yo Makers - found here
2 & 4: 14 inch straw wreath (you can pick any size) - found here
3: embroidery thread

5: your favorite buttons
6: felt in several colors
7: your choice of fabric
8: yarn in your color choice - I bought these here

not pictured - sharp scissors, needle, glue gun

1st Step:

wrap your wreath - take a seat on the couch in front of your favorite tv show, this can take a while ;)
DO NOT TAKE OFF THE PLASTIC WRAP! Makes the process easier and cleaner.

1. begin by tying off your starting point
2. wrap with first color skipping an even amount for next color
3. wrap with second color, tie off on the back

2nd step:
Make your yo yo's! If you haven't made yo yo's before.....be ready to be addicted. I discovered these handy little yo yo makers on my craft retreat and have NEVER looked back. There are fantastic step by step instructions here or if you want to do it the old fashion way here

Here are a few photos to show you how easy it is!

Make your felt flowers
I have been seeing these everywhere and wanted to learn how to make them myself for fun projects. Little did I know just how easy they were!

Step by step:

cut a long strip of felt and fold in half
1. snip with very sharp scissors on the folded side - don't cut all the way to the end, leave room to glue or sew
2. Fold over one end and continue to wrap around till you have wrapped the whole strip into a circle
3. To finish - many people use a glue gun - but I find it easier to just stitch through to attach together.
4. turn over and fluff - you have a fun fringy felt flower!

Next step - gather all your yo yo's & felt flowers. I actually pinned all mine on first to see how they all worked together. This is a great way to see how your wreath will look before you glue them on.

Finally - glue your flowers on - I did mine all in a cluster on one side and love how it turned out. The wreath is easy to hang from the wrapped yarn on the back. Or for more detail tie another piece of yarn and tie around the top to make a hanger.

Final Product - a pretty new wreath for Valentine's day or any day of the year.

These adorable little plush foxes....well sweet Emily of Kush Kush saw the post, then proceeded to read a bit more about us and found out we were adopting and wrote to see if she could sent Mr. Mini Fox to Ivey!!! Are you kidding me? Could that be any sweeter? I am constantly amazed at the love and support we are getting for our little Ivey. I feel so lucky! Emily I thank you for your lovely gift - Ivey will CHERISH it :)

This weeks Gussy Sews prompt was family rooms. Luckily our house had just been cleaned for our homestudy so I took a few photos of our family room. It is finally getting to be just how I like it, found furniture I love, in colors I adore - and the best part is my sweet little family loves it!

here is a good view of the whole space - this is a fill in rug I got for cheap at target since Olive had chewed holes in our last one. So I am still on the hunt for the perfect "dog friendly" rug for this space.

probably my favorite piece in the room - our lamp. We found this at a vintage shop in Memphis and fell in love immediately.

this chair was an awesome find at a local resale shop here in Chattanooga. And the beautiful afghan was made by my grandmother. I cherish it.....

I had always seen Marisol Spoon online and was so excited to get to see them in person at last weeks Indie Craft Parade. I first just introduced myself and wanted to tell them how much I loved their work, then I looked to my right and saw something that brought tears to my eyes - the above piece. A beautiful girl who reminds me of what I think Ivey will look like.....with a butterfly on her shoulder (which represents my dear friend I lost last year Laura). I had to have it. The piece also was framed with a gorgeous hand carved woodland frame with a bunny, fox, owl and deer. It was meant to be.

Here is the piece framed - I can't capture how gorgeous the frame is. But I do know how thankful I am for this piece.....and for meeting new friends Lauren & Jason

My niece has a huge space in my heart - she makes me smile and I am so lucky to call her my niece. I had the joy of having a slumber party last night with my sister in law, my niece Lucy, nephew Rigby and the 3 fur babies: Nellie, Olive & Daisy. Well I have to say of all the inspiration weeks this would unfortunately be my least fave....just because I don't have a love of the beach. I can't be in the sun, and can't get too hot so beach.....not really ideal. However I think the beach is beautiful, the smell, the colors, the breeze and the feel of the ocean on a warm day. honeymoon....we look like babies :)

11 years ago tomorrow (corey's birthday) Corey and I met in Atlanta. It was a whirlwind romance knowing from the very beginning that this relationship was different. This one was "it." We got married one year later (today, the day before Corey's birthday). Hard to believe that was 10 years ago. We eloped to Asheville, NC which later would become our home for 4 years. After that chapter we would settle in Chattanooga and feel blessed that we have truly found our home. We have had quite the last decade. I am so proud of how strong Corey and I have become throughout our marriage. We have had deaths of family and best friends, loss of (several) adoptions, a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, surgeries, lost jobs, 3 moves, nursing school, but through it all we remember WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER and have come out on the other side more in love and stronger than ever. I look around this crazy world and see so many relationships that don't make it....we are one of the lucky ones. I look forward to the next many decades with my best friend. I don't know what I did to deserve you, but Corey I thank you for loving me unconditionally - I couldn't have gone on this last 10 year journey without you. All my love....forever and ever.

That's right last week we were OFFICIALLY accepted to adopt from Ethiopia. You can find out more details here. This will be a long journey, and it may be too early to tell our friends but honestly we need ALL the support we can get. We love you and so thankful for each of you for being a part of our world. And to my blog readers out there - thanks for reading :) My business started almost 5 years ago as an adoption fundraiser and now we pray that we will get to bring our "ivey" home.

What inspires us....I am inspired all around me-nature, food, artwork, my friends & family - I see everything as an inspiration for something in my life. For this inspiration day - I chose to use pattern & fabric. It's funny I have quite the fabric collection and I don't even love to sew with a machine. Pamper Yourself....I try to do this often I think it is so important to having a great life. When Gussy Sews prompted us this week I was excited...but unfortunately I have been sick so pampering myself has been a little out of the question - even though I have gotten quite the good rest lately :) So in my dream world and when I feel better I think this will be in order!

***First I wake up after a lovely long nights sleep and have my every day oatmeal (made with half vanilla almond milk and half water, and 1 tbsp of honey peanut butter) and a heaping cup of coffee while I catch up with my favorite blogs and social media.

***At some point in the day there would be a massage in this beautiful outdoor oasis. Can you imagine? Back when I lived in Asheville my dear friend who was a massage therapist would come to my house and give me a massage under my gazebo under the trees. It was perfection...and I miss it.

***after my massage I would have to take a nap with these two :) Besides my hubby these are the best napping partners a girl could ask for.

***that night would include a picnic outside at my house with movies playing on this awesome movie screen. We would have our favorite foods, snacks and good wine - the only guest would be my hubby and our fur babies.

Oh my goodness what a wonderful thing to wake up to yesterday! I got accepted in Indie Craft Parade in Greenville, SC. I seriously wasn't expecting it at all after hearing how amazing the show was last year and how everyone was talking about how hard it would be to get in this year. Over 350 people applied and they only accepted under 100! EEEK! I am so beyond excited!

The show is September 9-11 and looks like it is going to be an awesome show! So definitely go here and check out more details. Now it is off to work for me :)

This week I was lucky enough to have my friend Amy's awesome camera.....I may have kept it a little too long, but I have been taking LOTS of fun pictures :) Here are a few collages of some of my favorites. I feel like I play everyday - I love my work, so it feels like play for me. And my fur babies are always included in the fun! On Sunday I had two special ladies in town - we treated ourselves to a yummy dinner at Easy Bistro I ate very healthy - but then we decided for dessert we would have fries! It was perfect....and began a very long, crazy, fun evening! Later my evening concluded with a trip to Alan Golds (our local gay bar) and Krystals.....lets just say Monday was spent in bed :)

This weeks inspiration workship (thanks to the lovely Gussy) is all about kitchens. Anyone that knows me knows I don't cook :( that is all the hubby. But I do love kitchens. I thought I would go the light airy, rustic route.

Inspiration Workshop {handmade}

I decided to take on another blog challenge. This time I am excited to be a part of Gussy Sews Inspiration Workshop. Each week we have a new prompt to find something that inspires us. This week was handmade, which sounds easy but with places like Pinterest you can see how the inspiration kind overflows. So I chose crewel embroidery, I am so in love with this style of embroidery and would love to learn all the stitches. So I searched on Pinterest for crewel work and these are my favorites. Enjoy! Hard to believe our youngest fur baby is 1 today! Olive is the best birthday gift I have ever received! Special thanks to my momma and daddy bob for my Olive. Olive came about when we had just lost an adoption and was the perfect therapy for us. So glad she is part of our crazy world.

My Hubby Graduated

Last weekend my awesome hubby graduated with a BSN from University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. After all his hard work he graduated with a Cum Laude in Nursing. Below are the photos taken by my dear friend Megan (of Soli Photography) of our friends and family celebrating his pinning ceremony.

That night we went to a graduation party put on by Corey's classmate Lisa.

We had such a great time celebrating with his classmates, I wondered why I hadn't hung out with them before!!

We had a wonderful weekend of celebrating. We ended the weekend with an awesome Mother's Day brunch Corey cooked for his mother, aunt and our family. Thanks to all the friends and family who celebrated with us. We are so lucky to have you guys.

I can't help it.....seeing things like this make me VERY bitter about not being able to be a mother. You can't see in this picture that the woman was also smoking a cigarette while being in an electric wheelchair and pushing a NEWBORN in a stroller with her bare feet. It broke my heart and I had to take a picture. Some things just aren't right......

just getting around to posting last weeks Project. Here is a collage of photos from our 3 days without power. I had a wedding on Friday that I had the pleasure of sewing custom items - well thank god for a headlamp and a sense of humor. My makeshift bunker in the hallway made me feel safe, thanks also in part to the wine and candles ;). And my hubby made us soup one night on his camp stove. Thank goodness for a handy hubby :)

Raining Love

After all the disaster in the south last week. I thought to myself "what can I do to help." Well I can stitch! SO I designed this Raining Love Raindrop that can be either a brooch or a barrette. The price is $10 and you can either do local pick up or $2 will come out of the $10 and I can ship it to you. ALL proceeds will go to my local Red Cross Chapter.

I am simply heartbroken over the disaster that swept through my area. If you haven't seen pictures or heard about it here are some links.

Saturday we had the MS Walk - it was my 6th year in a row doing the walk in Chattanooga and so far this year I am the top fundraiser in Chattanooga! SO excited about raising money for such a dear cause. The above photo is my awesome team - I took this at the halfway point, I am so fortunate to have people like this in my life!

13 years ago today my life changed.

For those of you who don’t know – I was in a house fire on UTC Campus at the Sigma Chi Fraternity House. I escaped the fire by jumping out of the top floor only to land on a sidewalk. I broke my back, both feet and burnt over half my body 3^rd degree. They said I would never walk again; I had 4 surgeries the first few days – skin graphs that now cover both of my arms and my entire back. Rods were put in my back that later would be covered in staff infection and be removed. Left foot – clean ankle break, right foot crushed and basically wired back together on the inside. I don’t sweat, I can’t cool myself off, I can’t be in the sun, I can’t push myself physically, my foot sometimes just likes to “go out” on me, I wake up with an aching back everyday, I have gained a lot of weight due to not being as active, I have lost a lot of my self esteem, I look in the mirror and see scars from head to toe, and I always wondered why it happened to me?

But you know…I am ALIVE to write this today. I lived, I fought, I stayed strong and pulled through. I walked again. . I kept my good attitude “most” of the 3 months I lived in the hospital with my mom. I left the hospital in crutches even though they told me I would be in a walker. I was and am completely supported by the BEST friends and family a girl could ask for. The most genuine man I know loves me unconditionally and I am fortunate to have been married to him 10 years this July. I have four fur children that bring smiles to my face on a daily basis. I have a business that continues to make my heart happy. I live in a city surrounded by friends and family. I am on a great weight loss path and am very determined to get my health back. I wake up thankful everyday that I was given another chance to live. God saved me that day for a reason and I plan to spend my entire LONG life discovering why.

To all the people in my life that day and the 13 years to follow – thank you. I couldn’t have done this without you. All of you are part of my journey. I love each of you and thank god for the difference you have made in my life.
